Friends,
This Sunday we’re diving into one of those stories that reminds us just how differently God sees the world. In 1 Samuel 16, the prophet Samuel is sent to anoint a new king—an assignment that looks both dangerous and impossible. He expects to find a warrior or a statesman, someone impressive. Instead, God says:
“Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature… for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
And then God chooses the youngest. The shepherd. The one nobody called in from the field.
David.
This is one of my favorite stories in all of scripture—not because David turns out to be perfect (he absolutely does not), but because of what this moment says about how God sees. Not the polished. Not the expected. Not the most impressive résumé. The one with the heart.
I think a lot of us have spent time feeling like we weren’t the one who’d be chosen. Too small. Too messy. Too outside the expected mold. This story is for us.
